Introduction There are 2 aspects to experiencing art; spatial and temporal. For sighted people, appreciating art is very much a visual experience; they see the ‘whole picture at any given time in a spatial way. When viewing larger pieces of art such as installation art, big sculptures or even architecture, the experience is more temporal as the whole picture only becomes visible sequentially - in a flowing yet piecemeal manner - as one moves around the object. Sighted people utilise both the fixed spatial and the flowing temporal aspects when experiencing art; however the spatial aspect appears to outweigh the temporal one. For blind people the opposite is true. Art appreciation becomes a non-visual tactile experience in which the art is experienced by actually touching and feeling the art in a sequential way. In this case, the temporal aspect dominates the spatial aspect.
