State-of-the-Arts Gallery is delighted to announce our partnership with The K Gallery from Seoul, Korea. Through this partnership, both galleries aspire to offer our artists an alternative overseas platform for exposure and cultural exchange. To commemorate our collaboration, The K Gallery has curated the Hong Kong debut exhibition of renowned Korean painter Joon-yeup Jeon, titled The Light in the Garden, showcasing his new series of landscape oil paintings. The exhibition runs from 1 to 30 April, 2012.

Landscape expert Joon-yeop Jeon is known for his tranquil and sensational portrayals of nature in his oil paintings. His work demonstrates the spirit of traditional Korean aesthetic, conveying a sense of ‘light and hope’ and the East Asians’ point of view on the nature, in which human beings can harmonize and unify. This series of paintings are tribute to Jeon’s own cultural heritage, history and nature. His inspirations originated from Traditional Ink Landscape Painting – Sansoohwa. As a contemporary artist, Jeon shows us Asian art and philosophy has always been deeply influenced by nature.

With exceptional vision and innovation, the artist has explored new ways to portray what he sees, feels and thinks within and beyond his cultural reference. To convey the Western cultural influence he experiences, Jeon uses western oil painting technique to express Korean aesthetic and traditional landscape paintings, replacing some Korean conventions with Western technique and modernism. Oil painting allows Jeon to maximize the effect of color and texture through Western technique such as coating and scratching, as well as Eastern ones such as smudging and blowing.

Jeon has held 26 solo exhibitions worldwide. His work is collected by the Japan Royal Palace, the South Korean Embassy in Switzerland and Osaka, Mayfield Hotel, the Official Residence of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and more.
